Recording with Upstairs Downstairs
Not too long after doing the recordings for Kyle's solo album we came back to Faultline studios to track some new songs for Upstairs Downstairs. The first day I came in tired from work but with food and beer in hand, and was more than happy to see a beautiful hammond organ churning away in the middle of the room when I walked in. I'm just a 'basics' sort of keyboard player, but even the basics sound great coming from an instrument like that. We tracked three songs with the hammond, switched to a Nord Electro 2 to do crunchy clavinet on one song and finished with a quick accordion line and some acoustic piano. Everything went smoothly with the exception of a botched solo on my part and the awkwardness that ensued when I suggested I should make a song sound "more like Rod Stewart" (Rod Stewart was good once…believe me!)
Anyway, here's a slightly voyeuristic video of me playing. Note the end, where I try and do a sweep into a solo and accidentally turn myself off. What a moron!
